Auctions are very stressful places for horses as they are extremely sensitive and sentient beings. Unfortunately, many of these racehorses end up in traders and/or kill buyers’ hands.
Once these horses are in the slaughter pipeline they are crammed onto overloaded trucks without food, water, or even enough space to rest. Many of the older, weak, and/or injured horses go down on these hauls and get trampled. Sadly, not only thoroughbreds find themselves being sold at the auction, but any breed of horse can be sold for any reason and in any condition. There are no laws protecting equines as they are considered livestock.
It is hard to believe in 2024 that horses have no protection and can be sold to auctions or kill pens in the most despicable condition. These animals have no choice where they end up or who they are sold to.
The damage done to these horses are not only physically but mentally as well. It can take months before these horses start feeling well physically and emotionally. Rehabilitation for horses is a process and we understand that each horse is different with a different story, a different experience, and requires unique and specialized care. Ultimately, we must do better for these amazing animals, and we need your help to spread awareness and educate the general public about the dark side of the horse industry.
Horses are kind, intelligent, willing, and truly special animals that are expensive to properly care for. Most people that don’t own horses do not realize all that goes into taking excellent care of horses. Not only is it time-consuming, it is also costly. We as a team love our rescue horses and care for them solely out of pocket but we want to help more and in order to do so we need help donations. With that said we take the time to let our rescues decompress and heal emotionally, mentally, and physically.
The first step, while the animal is in quarantine, is to have our equine vet out to do a physical examination, update vaccines, complete lab work, float teeth, and do a lameness evaluation, if warranted. We also tailor the horse’s diet accordingly to their age and body composition. The farrier is another essential component of our rescue team and visits the horse within the first week.
Unfortunately, most horses that end up in kill pens are extremely emaciated with long, sore hooves and suffer from other health ailments.
At Reining Glory we will help these horses have a second chance at life. A life they ALL deserve. Our rescue horses in time will be restarted and find a new purpose in life. Natural horsemanship trainers help horses live up to their potential and eventually find them a new forever home if feasible for that specific horse.
